The idea for Operation: Greenthumb started in 2019 when Markis and I were dating and attending school together at Kansas State University. We were both getting our bachelor's degrees in Horticulture and living in an agricultural city we saw a lot of people trying to start their own landscape companies and trying to sell plants. While we never intended to start a business we realized many of these places lacked a sense of science and leaned more towards marketing, mass producing, and selling what was trendy at the time. Sometimes this meant gluing paper flowers to cacti, advertising just add ice orchids, or selling plants without giving people the proper care information.

Being two people who had our own plant collection at home of over 250 + plants that we cared for by ourselves we hated to stand by and watch people get ripped off. So we decided that we needed to start a company that sells plants not as a hobbyist or as a mass producer but as scientists who cared about how the plants work and how to educate others on these topics too. This meant people could do it themselves and not waste money at big box stores or local stores that just wanted to sell you a plant and stop there.

Markis and I both share a love of all things Horticulture from pathology and disease recognition to plant identification and wildlife ecology. Plants to us aren’t just plants they are an ecosystem that supports many other realms of life and provides shelter, food, and life to the world around them

We provide the scientific information behind the plants and how they work. Operation: Greenthumb's mission is to educate people and give them the tools to do it for themselves while creating a discussion in our community that allows people to teach each other from their own experiences

Operation: Greenthumb is an outlet for us to share our passion with you and give you all the correct and up-to-date scientific information. Other than education OGT’s mission is to strive for the upmost quality of our plants.
