Quick Facts

Common Names: Zig Zag Plant, Slipper Spurge, Jacobs Ladder

Latin Name: Euphorbia tithymaloides

Being from the diverse Euphorbia family Devils Backbone is no different. This somewhat succulent perennial offers a beautiful multitoned glossy foliage that steals the show and makes any location pop. Along with the foliage this plant has an amazing zig zag shaped stem that resembles a backbone hence the name. Its environmental requirements allow it to be used outside in a container or flower bed or indoors as a houseplant. With a little more intense light you can also achieve a nice pink to red coloration on the tips of the foliage.

Although it is beautiful its milky sap or latex makes it toxic to humans and animals. If ingested it can cause irritation of the mouth and throat and possible vomiting. If it comes into contact with your skin it can cause irritation and possibly blisters. It is highly recommended to wear long sleeves, long pants, and even goggles if necessary to prevent contact with skin and eyes.
